SpaceCadet hand-dyes yarn in a beautiful spectrum from brights to muteds and semi-solids to wildly variegateds.  We follow where the colour leads and explore what it creates on merino, silk, bamboo, and linen.  Our favourite thing is creating amazing one-of-a-kind sweater sets from our skeins!

What kinds of things do you carry / what services do you provide?

I teach sewing, design and quilting classes.  I have a sewing program that allows Home Schoolers the opportunity to earn scholastic achievement  in Family & Consumer Sciences.  As a dressmaker, I specialize in bridal gown alterations and custom clothing.

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to open your business?

I feel as though I've been in this business all of my lifetime. I became interested in sewing at the age of ten.  I continued my studies in Commercial Sewing & Business Management.   I have been sewing for over forty years! I am achieving a lifetime dream of creating apparel and teaching others the valuable life skill of sewing.  In 2015, LEONAs GALLERY Sewing Studio took up residence at the Historic Savage Mill.  What a  wonderful back drop to be in such an historical place that speaks to the overall craft and textile industry. 

What's your favorite thing about owning your own business?

The ability to handle day to day operations that are based on my level of integrity.  Living a lifestyle that's spiritual, balanced, healthy and passionate.

2018: Snallygaster Fibers

We focus on intense, pooling superwash wool sock yarn. We also have bulky and DK wool. Our colors are inspired by our favorite fandoms and Baltimore roots. We dye sport alpaca sourced from a rescue farm in Maine. Additionally, we have a smattering of stitch markers and small project bags.

We're at 4706 Bethesda Avenue, just off Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, MD.  Our hours are
11-7 Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday;
11-9 Thursday; 10-6 Saturday; and 12-6 Sunday.

What kinds of things do you carry?

We stock yarns to inspire your creations, whether it's a delicate lace shawl or an indestructible toddler sweater!  Our yarns range from hearty basics to sinful luxury, although we will admit to a preference for natural fibers.  And we love hand-dyes wherever they come from--we stock Shalimar from right up the road in Frederick, Black Trillium from Portland, Oregon, and yarns from everywhere in between.

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to open your business?

We just started our fourth year in business!  We were both long-time yarn store employees, and when the owner decided to sell, we saw the chance to create the kind of place we would want as knitters--beautiful yarns, expert advice, and a warm and friendly atmosphere.  We love yarn as much as you do!

What's your favorite thing about having a LYS? 

Not one thing, but two:  the chance to work with amazing yarn, and the chance to work with our amazing customers.

2018: Shalimar Yarns

Hand dyed in Maryland - luxury yarns in a curated palette of saturated solids and varigateds. Our yarns are all custom designed and milled for us. We're celebrating our 10th Anniversary in 2018 with the release of two new yarns, new colorways and new pattern designs.

When is it happening?
This year the Charm City Yarn Crawl will be April 6th - 15th.

What inspired you to start the crawl? 
Honestly, we wanted to participate in the Metro Yarn Crawl in D.C. but we were too far away to participate. Danielle from Fibre Space encouraged us to start our own crawl and even connected us with people who could help us get started. I think it benefits customers as well as LYS owners.

How does it benefit customers?
Customers buy a tote for $15 and during the yarn crawl they are entitled to 20% off their purchase of yarn, fiber and patterns. They have a "passport" they will get stamped as they visit the shops (no purchase necessary for a stamp). While they are at the shops they should ask what the shop has as a raffle prize because at the end of the crawl, they'll drop their stamped passport off at the shop with the prize they like the most. 

This event is a great way for customers to be introduced to all of their local yarn shops. Each shop has their own specialty and a yarn crawl is the perfect opportunity for each shop to demonstrate their uniqueness to a new group of customers.

We are located in Catonsville, MD at 77 Mellor Avenue

We're open Monday-Sunday from 10 am-6pm. In addition, we host the following:

What kinds of things do you carry?
We carry a wide variety of products but some of our favorites are Malabrigo, Hedgehog Fibres, and Hobbledehoy Rovings and batts. We are also the home of Tempting Ewe Yarns which are hand-dyed by the owners Wae and Amanda. Cloverhill is a full-service Local Yarn Store and as expected, offers a range of yarn and notions from workhorse and sensibly priced to something a little higher end. We’re happy to help find a pattern and yarn that fits your inspiration and offer help on a project that might have you stumped. We also offer classes and private lessons for weaving, crochet, spinning and knitting.

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to open your business?
Wae and I (Amanda) met over a drum-carder in 2012 and hit it off right away. Spring of 2013 we joined together as Tempting Ewe Yarns and participated in our first Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival with the previous owner of Cloverhill Yarn Shop. When the opportunity came about to buy Cloverhill, we saw the chance to rejuvenate the business and revitalize the Cloverhill Community spirit that started almost 50 years ago with the Weaver’s Place. Since then, the open table policy has customers dropping by on their day off or during a lunch break to catch some knitting time. We feel confident in saying since taking ownership, we’ve built on the history of our shop to create a space where the fiber loving community can gather free of judgement or prejudice to celebrate a love for our craft. We have the most supportive community of women and men and it really shows.

What's your favorite thing about having a LYS?
Of course we have a fondness for yarn and fiber but more important, our favorite part about having a LYS would have to be the people we interact with every day. We enjoy meeting new customers, getting to know them and welcoming them into our community. They know we're their safe place and if they need help we're there. We also enjoy the giving spirit of our customers as they support local charities through donations at the shop. We really have an amazing and caring community of crafters at Cloverhill and it regularly fills my heart with joy to know it.
