2020: Wild Hare Fiber Studio

Wild Hare Fiber Studio

Wild Hare Fiber Studio is known for hand-dyed yarns and fibers both wild and mild: from black light reactive, gradient dyed, speckled and splatterdash yarns, to custom blended, space dyed and vegan spinning fibers. You'll always find something new and inspiring from Wild Hare! Also home of the Weave-a-Round Circle loom.

Wild Hare Fiber Studio

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
I was a realtor obsessed with spinning and knitting when the real estate market began to crash in 2007. One day, with real estate deals falling through and the market in a tumble, I said to myself 'I've a mind to go off on a wild hare and start a fiber business.' I tentatively listed a few skeins of handspun on etsy thinking it might at least help fund my fiber addiction. When asked for my business name, I thought -- what the heck -- and typed in wildhare. The name stuck. (And no, I don't raise rabbits!) My online fiber business grew and I soon left real estate behind and started doing shows and festivals too. My 'wild hare' turned out to be the right choice!

What's your favorite thing about being a yarnie?
Having the perfect excuse for spending lots of time messing around with yarn and fiber... and being able to say 'that's not a ridiculously big stash - it's inventory!"

Three Ravens Studio

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?

Three Ravens Studio has been in business for 13 years as a fiber and yarn vendor! I originally started out as a bath and body person who was spinning as a hobby, but the yarn kept piling up faster than I could knit it, and I decided to add it to my shop. It quickly took over as my obsession and I expanded to fibers, then weaving. It was the best decision I ever made!

What's your favorite thing about being a yarnie and maker?
It's a toss up between watching yarn and fiber come from my hands and go out into the world to help make beautiful projects happen, and getting to meet all the amazing, cool people in the fiber world.

Is your shop involved in any charity or educational efforts you’d like to let people know about?

My shop regularly gives to RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network), the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization - https://www.rainn.org/

Cloverhill Yarn Shop
open M-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 12-5
(limited occupancy at this time)
How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
7 years. Once I learned to knit, I became curious about yarn as a process. From fleece to finished product. When I started dyeing, it was with plant dyes, followed by Greener Shades eco-friendly dyes, and finally traditional acid dyes. I've always enjoyed playing with color and that's what keeps me interested in dyeing. I have recipes for most colorways but love the one-off colorways I get when I'm having fun in the studio.
What's your favorite thing about being a yarnie?
Play time and finished objects! I enjoy blasting music and trying out new color experiments but I also LOVE LOVE LOVE seeing what people work up with the yarn I've dyed.
Is your shop involved in any charity or educational efforts you’d like to let people know about?
We accept donations for our local school's classroom projects, 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela, Knitters without Borders (knit or crochet bears).

Ross Farm

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
The Ross Farm in Eighty Four, PA has been in the Ross family since 1910. Amy Ross Manko inherited the farm from her mother, Hunny, and has been running it for 10+ years. She is the fifth generation farming on the land, and her son Drew Manko is the sixth generation. Amy decided to focus on raising rare breed sheep for the handspinner and handknitter market after falling in love with the Leicester Longwools at Colonial Williamsburg.

What's your favorite thing about being a farmer?
The sheep, of course! They all have their own personalities and it's wonderful.

Is your shop involved in any charity or educational efforts you’d like to let people know about?
We are one of the farms involved with the Livestock Conservancy's Shave 'Em to Save 'Em Initiative, which is encouraging farmers to keep raising rare breed sheep by increasing the value of their products in the maker market. You can sign up at www.rarewool.org! We are also a collection point for Knitted Knockers, which are knitted or crocheted cotton breast prostheses for breast cancer survivors. You can find free patterns and more info at knittedknockers.org.

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
I have always enjoyed drawing, knitting, sewing, anything to do with color...I opened my etsy shop 9-10 years ago, after much encouragement from friends and family. I started with lots of hand dyed reclaimed yarn. I added a couple of my hand drawn stitch marker designs, and started getting a lot of attention. My stitch markers are unique to my shop since I draw all of the original images, and they are now my primary product. I am so fortunate to have found a such a great little creative niche where I can do all of my favorite things - draw, color, dye yarn and fiber, basically make stuff...and hopefully make my customers smile!

What's your favorite thing about being a maker?
I am certainly a maker, I always have been. Having a creative outlet is extremely important to me. Being able to incorporate my creativity into a small business has been amazing. I am so grateful to all the folks who have made that possible for me.

We offer on farm shopping by appointment. You can shoot us an email to set one up. We are also open at least one Sunday a month, check our website for the day and times. We are located on the Eastern side of Frederick.

    What shops carry your products?
We have had yarn at Lovely Yarn, Yarnability, Black Sheep Yarn Shop and Knit Locally

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
I have been in business for 13 years. When we moved to Maryland, I decided that I wanted a farm so that I could raise animals with fleeces to spin, knit and weave with. It has grown a lot since then so that I have enough yummy fiber for myself and for you too!

What's your favorite thing about being a farmer and yarnie?
I love to dye! I do it just about every day. It is so much fun to see how colors interact with each other. It is something that delights me. My animals give us stability and some laughs as well. Our farm is a little bit of paradise in Frederick County.

Is your shop involved in any charity or educational efforts you’d like to let people know about?
I offer classes in various dye techniques throughout the year. We also host teachers for needle felting and other fun crafty things for people to make.

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
I’ve been in business for 11 years. I started my business as an outlet for my anxiety and depression. I found if my hands were busy, my mind was good. I started dyeing beautiful yarn for myself to knit and weave with and my business was born!

What's your favorite thing about being a yarnie?
I enjoy this community so much. It’s made up of so many types of people, from all different backgrounds. It’s just amazing.

Do you have a brick & mortar location people can visit?
29100 Ridge Road, Mount Airy, MD 21771
We do monthly and annual events including farm tours, however, currently we are operating on "by appointment only" for under 10 persons at a time. We will follow MD state guidelines and policy as the situation evolves.

How long have you been in business, and what inspired you to start your business?
We started the farm part back in 1997 and slowly began the yarn and fiber part between 2003 and 07. I was a public school art teacher and I made a career change to do my own art and craft. I feel lucky as I have been passionate about both!

What's your favorite thing about being a farmer, yarnie, or maker?
Yes - Hooray! I am a farmer, yarnie and maker! For me - to live is to create! And I love two primary aspects of what I do... I love the doing and the making and the creative part of all the yarns and the rovings, but I am a people person too. So, I also love connecting with people about their own artistic passions!

Is your shop involved in any charity or educational efforts you’d like to let people know about?
We have two: We sell Saint Mary's Scarf kits that when knitted up make a wearable "pink ribbon" to support Breast Cancer and the Cancer Society. The second one is we sell fiber angle ornaments. They support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. In both cases proceeds are sent to the foundations.

Today we have many rovings to choose from including our pre-drafted gradient rovings that are a super easy, fun spin!!
